Exerpt from the School of Nursing's Chair, Dr.Karlowicz

"We are writing to invite you to participate in the inaugural student exchange between Old Dominion University School of Nursing (ODU) and Paracelsus Medizinische Privatuniversität (PMU) School of Nursing. PMU is located in Salzburg, Austria.  This exchange will take place October 21st to November 4th 2015.  Two ODU students will travel to Austria and two PMU students will come to Norfolk.

The “2-in-1 care model” of education is the framework for undergraduate nursing education in Austria. This means that in the 3.5-year program, students graduate with both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) and a Diploma in General Nursing and Healthcare. Students receive their didactic nursing education in Salzburg.  They then receive their clinical skills education at hospitals and clinics located throughout the country in other towns/cities. Hence, PMU collaborates with selected schools for healthcare and nursing throughout Austria to provided clinical practicums.

ODU student nurses will spend 3 days at the main campus in Salzburg and then spend the remainder of the 2-week period in Linz, Austria observing patient care at the Wagner-Jaureggclinic. The Wagner-Jauregg clinic is a well-known center for its treatment of psychological, neurological, neurosurgical and geriatric conditions. The clinic providers specialize in neurological disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson´s disease. Brain and spinal cord neurosurgical operations are conducted at the Wagner-Jauregg clinic. Patients receive treatments for depression, psychoses, addictions, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder as well as other mental illnesses."
