Clubhaus // Künste & Kultur (Clinical days 3 & 4)

On Friday, we went to an outpatient Clubhaus for Wagner-Jauregg. This portion of our time at Wagner-Jauregg introduced us to public health nursing in Austria! This time we were paired up with PMU nursing student Simon. Patients can come here after discharge from the hospital. It provides day structure. They can help with cooking, cleaning while socializing. The first club house actually began in New York City in 1948. Patients feel needed and part of a family. The basis of the club is Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft (Community & Society). It helps bring patients back into society and the community. We spent the day talking with patients. One patient even taught (well tried to) us how to knit (stricken = to knit). We also had the chance to attent a presentation of the Clubhaus. For the rest of the day, we spoke with patients. Laura's head hurt at the end of the day after hearing so much German and trying to translate it fast enough!

Monday morning we went to another outpatient facility called Künste & Kultur (translated Arts & Culture). This facility is also run by the same overseeing organization that the Clubhaus was run by, Pro Mente. This is a government-funded program that includes the Clubhaus, Künste & Kultur, and a sports therapy program. The day ended up being a shorter day, as most of the members come in the evening time after work or later on during the week when more group activities are going on. However, this gave us the chance to see the facility in its entirety and ask questions about their program. The facility contains a group meeting area and rooms and equipment for all of the following areas: videography, music and sound production, theater, dance, photography, painting, ceramics, screen printing, and costume design. This is mostly an open facility where members can come and go as they please. Members can try something in the arts for the very first time or they can work in an area that they have much experience in. For most areas, members work individually on a project but some areas such as theater or dance can be more group oriented. For areas such as these, group times are scheduled and the facility even puts on productions or displays from time to time. The mission of this organization is to help people with mental illnesses discover areas of interest and learn how to manage and fill their leisure time effectively and with healthy activities.
